Overview of Epik Protocol

Epik Protocol is the world’s first decentralized storage protocol for AI data. It runs on the Ethereum blockchain. Its interest is in the construction of a decentralized ultra large scale knowledge graph with the intent of preservation, transfer and improvement of human knowledge. It proposes the use of the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) technology of peer to peer networks for data storage and sharing on a distributed file system.

Through IPFS Storage Technology, Token Incentive Mechanism and DAO Governance Model, Epik Protocol has created a global open autonomous community characterized by trusted storage, trusted incentives, trusted governance and trusted finance.

What is an Autonomous Community?

An autonomous community is a first-level subnational administrative division or internal territory of a sovereign state that has a degree of self-governance under the national government.

Relating the basic concept of an autonomous community in government to blockchain technology you need to know about DAO — the body promoting the control and sharing of data by individuals on a blockchain rather than a central body.

What is DAO?

Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), which is also known as a Decentralized Autonomous Corporation (DAC), is an organization represented by rules encoded as a computer program that is transparent, controlled by the organization members and not influenced by a central government.

Features of the DAO

As stated in its name, DAO has the following features. The first three are its basic features and all the listed features make them different from other traditional organizations:

  • Decentralization: They are not governed by a centralized body.
  • Autonomy: They can perform operations automatically and autonomously, without any external intervention or involvement.
  • Organization: They are an organization that follow its own rules, which are written in smart contracts and executed on a blockchain.
  • They are open source, transparent and incorruptible.
  • They have no hierarchical structure, such as traditional organisations.
  • The proposals to take decisions are taken and voted by majority vote of the network actors involved.
  • All organization transactions are recorded and maintained on a blockchain.

All these features, make the DAO transparent, decentralised, uncensorable and autonomous.

These characteristic features of the DAO organizes global community users to work together at an extremely low management cost, and continuously produce high-quality AI data that can be jointly built and shared (a knowledge graph).

Epik Protocol, Knowledge Graph Technology & AI

Epik Protocol aims to construct a decentralized large scale knowledge graph (KG) using blockchain technology to expand the horizons of today’s AI technology. Innovating the decentralized storage technology which originated from Filecoin, Token Economy, DAO and DeFi, it will organize human knowledge from various fields into Knowledge Graphs.

These decentralized knowledge graphs will form and build an eternal human knowledge base which; can be shared and will be updated continuously. The long term goal of EpiK protocol is to make available a Knowledge Graph with a vast area of knowledge and field of data to expand the vision of AI.

What is a Knowledge Graph?

A Knowledge Graph is a model of a knowledge domain or knowledge base created by subject-matter experts with the help of intelligent machine learning algorithms. It provides a structure and common interface for all of your data and enables the creation of smart multilateral relations throughout your databases.

Epik Protocol believes they can broaden AI’s horizons and usher in the era of cognitive intelligence using their structure and Knowledge Graph Technology.

To understand the applications of Knowledge Graph Technology in Artificial Intelligence (AI), let’s have a summary of AI.

What is an AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines. These machines are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. AI is a collection of technologies that excel at extracting insights and patterns from large sets of data, then making predictions based on that information.

The limits and capabilities of an AI are based on what I like to call its knowledge base. A knowledge base is a compilation of data from various fields of knowledge (a knowledge graph). In the working of an AI, an AI is programmed to take actions or make predictions based on the knowledge base on its database, and this horizon is what EpiK Protocol intends to broaden. By making the source code for the knowledge base open-source on the blockchain, EpiK Protocol makes it possible to achieve a wider knowledge base using the input from different nodes.

Features of a Knowledge Graph

Knowledge graphs combine characteristics of several data management paradigms:

  • Database, because the data can be explored via structured queries;
  • Graph, because they can be analyzed as any other network data structure;
  • Knowledge base, because they bear formal semantics, which can be used to interpret the data and infer new facts.

How Epik’s Knowledge Graph works

The unit of the knowledge graph data in Epik Protocol is bin-log files smaller than 8M, and each bin-log file contains a series of ordered operations. These operations include updates to the knowledge graph schema and n-triple data of each domain.

Only Domain Experts can upload bin-log files in their respective responsible domains, so each binlog file carries traceable information, which in turn is inherited to every operation in the file and is further inherited to each n-triple data of the EpiK Protocol knowledge graph.

Domain Experts use various bin-log conversion and generation tools supplied by EpiK Protocol to convert knowledge graph data from various sources into formatted bin-log files, before uploading them to EpiK Protocol Network to increase the contribution of experts in this domain.

The bin-log file will be backed up and saved by Knowledge Node around the world, and a CDN network will be formed spontaneously. When there is a need to read data, the demander can configure its filters, such as which domain to read, etc., and start the configured knowledge gateway.

It will synchronize the on-chain data, download the filtered bin-log files and replay all operations in the files in order, and restore a graph database containing the required knowledge graph data locally. The demander can further perform queries based on the synchronized graph database, which contains the retrieved knowledge graph data.

Final Thoughts

With EpiK Protocol, we look forward to a future where AI can serve and offer better services in different areas of its application. In Health Care, City Governance, Public Security, General Manufacturing, Smart Construction, Intelligent Risk Control, Smart Investment Advisor etc.
